Vijfgatenbrug
Ter Aar

vijfgatenbrug 2 vijfgatenbrug 3

The Vijfgatenbrug in Ter Aar is the first tailbridge in the Netherlands. The bridge has two bearing bars who are positioned on both sides of the bridge deck. The functional properties of the bearing bars and the bridge deck are separated. This means that the bearing bars don't play a part in the strength of the bridge deck. The task of the bearing bars is only to swing the bridge deck out off the bridge opening. The task of the bridge deck is merely bearing the road traffic. This bridge type lends itself for deckconstructions with low construction height. The tailbridge lends itself very good for exchanging a fixed bridge by a movable bridge. The foundation of the tailbridge is built aside of the fixed bridge.
